Kimchi Jjigae vs Doenjang Jjigae: Which Korean Stew Should You Order?
Choose kimchi jjigae if you want a tangy, kimchi-led stew; choose doenjang jjigae if you want the savory depth of fermented soybean paste. Both go well with rice, and either can contain meat or seafood. If your deciding factor is heat, vegetarian ingredients or the total meal price, ask the restaurant rather than relying on the dish's name.
Two steaming pots can look equally inviting when you are hungry and reading a Korean menu for the first time. You do not need to learn a recipe before ordering. Start with the flavor you want, then check three practical details: the ingredients, the rice and the portion.
Food references checked October 16, 2026. This is a menu-reading guide, not a restaurant review or a claim that we tasted the pictured dishes. Recipes and serving arrangements vary.
Kimchi jjigae: choose the tangy direction
Look for 김치찌개 on the menu. Well-ripened kimchi gives the broth its sour, fermented character. Chili and kimchi bring the red, spicy direction; the exact heat depends on the kitchen.
The Korean government's kimchi-stew recipe uses pork and tofu, and also notes versions with beef or seafood. That is a useful reminder to read any ingredient words beside the dish name. 돼지고기 means pork; 참치 means tuna. A menu calling something simply “kimchi stew” leaves those details open.
This is the direction to choose when the sourness of fermented cabbage sounds appealing. If sour food is what you are trying to avoid, asking for less chili will not remove the kimchi's tang. Think of sourness and chili heat as two separate preferences.

Doenjang jjigae: choose the soybean-paste direction
Look for 된장찌개. Its foundation is doenjang, a fermented soybean paste. The Korea Tourism Organization's description includes tofu, mushrooms, zucchini and Manila clams among the possible ingredients.
Expect the soybean paste to lead the flavor. Compared with kimchi jjigae, it offers a route toward a savory, earthy pot without making sour cabbage the main event. That does not guarantee a gentle chili level: a kitchen may add peppers, and the strength of the paste also varies.
If you like tofu and vegetables but feel uncertain about fermented flavors, ask for a description before ordering. Doenjang jjigae is an introduction to soybean-paste flavor, rather than a neutral vegetable soup.

Tofu in the pot does not tell you what is in the broth
Neither name is a reliable vegetarian label. Pork is one documented kimchi-jjigae ingredient, while clams appear in KTO's doenjang-jjigae example. Recipe author Maangchi's own doenjang-jjigae recipe also uses shrimp and dried anchovies, with the anchovy pouch removed before serving. A bowl can therefore look vegetable-heavy while containing seafood in its stock.
If you avoid particular ingredients, explain them before ordering and ask about the broth and seasonings as well as the toppings. Requesting “no pork” does not by itself establish that the whole dish suits your diet. If the answer is unclear, choose a dish whose ingredients the kitchen can confirm.
Check whether you are ordering a meal or an extra pot
A stew beside a bowl of rice is an easy meal to picture. The menu price still needs a quick check. Ask whether 공깃밥—a bowl of plain rice—is included, and whether the listed stew is one person's meal or something to share. This matters especially when you see it alongside a barbecue order.
For example, if one menu lists “kimchi jjigae + rice” and another lists only “doenjang jjigae,” you cannot compare the prices fairly until you know whether rice costs extra and how many people the pot serves. This is a menu-reading example, not a fixed rule about either dish.
If you are ordering stew with grilled meat, our Korean barbecue portion guide helps with the separate meat order. For the little dishes arriving around your rice, see our banchan guide. Ask about the restaurant's refill policy rather than assuming every item is unlimited.

어느 게 덜 매워요?

Does the broth contain meat or seafood?
공깃밥 포함인가요?
Is a bowl of rice included?
일 인분 주문할 수 있어요?
Can I order one serving?
Once the answers work for you, 김치찌개 일 인분 주세요 means “One serving of kimchi jjigae, please.” Substitute 된장찌개 for doenjang jjigae. You can show the Korean line on your phone if saying it feels difficult.
The decision can stay pleasantly small: tangy kimchi or fermented soybean paste, then a quick ingredient and rice check. Choose the pot you are curious about, with enough information to enjoy the meal on your own terms.
