Korean BBQ Portions: What Does One Serving Mean?

At a Korean barbecue restaurant, “one serving” (1인분) does not tell you the whole size of your meal. Read the grams beside each cut, then check the minimum order and what the price includes. Two menu units can mean different amounts of meat—even at the same restaurant.

If you are used to a steak arriving with its sides, this is the menu detail to check before choosing a cut. Here is a practical way to turn the numbers into an order you understand.

What does 1인분 mean on a Korean BBQ menu?

Il-inbun (1인분) literally means a portion for one person. For ordering meat, treat it as the menu’s stated unit and look for its weight. The word alone cannot tell you whether you will feel full.

Read each item in this order: cut → grams → price → ordering conditions → included dishes. If you want pork belly, look for 삼겹살 (samgyeopsal). The Korea Tourism Organization’s dish guide identifies it as pork belly and describes eating the grilled meat with lettuce and seasonings.

A real menu: the small price difference hides a weight difference

The Goban Sikdang Geoje Gohyeon branch menu, marked “information checked September 15, 2026,” lists the following. These are branch-specific examples.

Two listed cuts, compared on the same weight basis
Menu itemListed unitOur calculation per 100g
Samgyeopsal
삼겹살
150g · ₩15,000₩10,000
Hangjeongsal
항정살, listed as 돈치맛살
120g · ₩16,000About ₩13,333

Our calculation: menu price ÷ listed grams × 100. The second cut costs ₩1,000 more per unit but contains 30g less. Two listed units of belly total 300g for ₩30,000; two of hangjeongsal total 240g for ₩32,000.

This helps compare quantity and cost. It does not tell you which cut tastes better, or whether either amount will satisfy two diners.

A meat order and a complete set need different comparisons

Weight alone also leaves out the rest of the meal. In Woobriand’s official menu PDF, dated August 27, 2025 in its filename, individual beef cuts are listed at 150g, while the assorted beef course specifies 200g per person with other courses.

The lunch rib-finger set lists 150g alongside rice, soybean-paste stew and coffee or tea. Its set-menu section specifies a minimum of two diners. That is a condition attached to that menu, rather than evidence of a rule for every Korean barbecue restaurant. We use this older PDF to illustrate menu formats, not to quote current hotel prices.

Three questions to ask before ordering

You can show these Korean sentences to the staff; the English underneath explains what you are asking.

  1. 처음 주문할 때 최소 몇 인분을 주문해야 하나요?
How many servings do we need to order initially?
  2. 서로 다른 부위로 주문해도 되나요?
    Can we order different cuts?
Useful if you want to split the required order across two cuts.
  3. 밥과 찌개는 포함인가요, 따로 주문하나요?
Are rice and stew included, or ordered separately?

If you are eating alone, add 혼자 식사할 수 있나요?—“Can I dine here alone?” Buying two meat units and meeting a two-diner set requirement are different things.

How much should you order?

Use the menu weight to understand your first order, then consider appetite and the rest of the meal. A group planning rice or noodles may choose differently from one coming mainly for the grill.

Ask about the required initial order and whether you can add more afterward. Once those conditions are clear, choose the first amount rather than treating “one serving each” as a guarantee. You can write down: number of units × grams per unit = listed meat total. Keep rice, stew and drinks separate when estimating the bill.
