BTS English Songs Guide: Dynamite, Butter & Permission to Dance

Start with “Dynamite” for bright disco pop, “Butter” for a bass-and-synth groove, or “Permission to Dance” for a warmer singalong mood. These three BTS singles from 2020–21 are sung in English, so they offer an easy entry if you want to follow the words as well as the music.

You can pick one by mood rather than learn the whole catalog. This guide compares the original songs, links their official videos, and clears up the album and video labels you will see next.

Dynamite: the bright disco-pop starting point

If you are unsure where to begin, this is our first pick. BIGHIT’s release page identifies “Dynamite” as disco pop and BTS’s first song released completely in English. Its upbeat presentation makes it a straightforward introduction to the group’s lighter pop side.

Use this as your reference version before exploring the remixes. If you enjoy the dance-pop energy but want a more bass-focused comparison, move to “Butter.”

Butter: follow the bass and synths

Choose “Butter” when you want the groove to lead. The official introduction singles out its bass line and crisp synthesizer sounds. Those are useful listening landmarks: notice how the instrumental keeps the song moving beneath the vocals.

There is a difference in attitude, too. In Weverse Magazine’s interview with BIGHIT’s A&R team leader Nicole Kim, she explains that the group wanted “Butter” to convey their own charm rather than repeat another pandemic message of hope. That makes it a useful contrast with the more reassuring “Permission to Dance.”

Permission to Dance: the warmer singalong choice

This is our choice for an encouraging mood. BIGHIT’s Butter CD-single page describes “Permission to Dance” as dance pop built around piano and strings, with Ed Sheeran and Steve Mac involved in its creation. Compared with “Butter,” those instrumental features give you a different sound to follow.

The song’s welcoming idea also shaped its development. In the A&R interview linked above, Kim explains that the lyrics were changed from a more personal love-song idea to suit the group’s message. You do not need that background to enjoy it, but it helps explain why this is the reassuring pick on our route.

Original MV, B-side MV or remix?

Begin with the original official music video linked under each song. “MV” simply means music video. The uploads here are on HYBE LABELS, and BIGHIT’s release pages also list the official videos.

On the Dynamite page, “MV (B-side)” is an alternative video for “Dynamite,” not a fourth song in this guide. The page separately lists a choreography version, which is another viewing option once you know the song. A remix changes the musical arrangement; an instrumental version removes the lead vocal part. Those labels matter when you want to compare the same original recordings.

Are these three songs on one album?

You will find them across different releases. “Dynamite” came out as a digital single and is also on BE, alongside its lead single “Life Goes On.” The Butter CD single brings together “Butter,” “Permission to Dance” and their instrumental versions. It is not a three-song collection containing “Dynamite.”

For this first listen, the three original videos are enough. If you then want a longer record, choose BE to hear “Dynamite” in an album context, or check the Butter CD track list for the two 2021 songs together.

Where to go after the English songs

The trio introduces one part of BTS’s music. If the comforting mood of “Permission to Dance” appeals to you, try Life Goes On — official MV next. BIGHIT describes that BE lead single around reassurance in an uncertain time; it offers a quieter next step beyond this English-song route.
